HistoryBuff.com is a nonprofit 501(c)(3)organization at both the state (Michigan) and the Federal level. HistoryBuff.com first went online in 1995 and currently averages 10 million file accesses and in excess of 3 million page views annually. 1,782 Web sites have links to HistoryBuff.com files. Almost all of these links are from school, library, or historical societies Web sites.

I, Rick Brown, have never taken a dime for my labor for work done on HistoryBuyff.com. I have also previously paid all other expenses associated with HistoryBuff.com - server fees, traffic fees, hardware and software, as well as advanced programming that I am unable to do. Keeping the site online and constantly updating it has become quite costly. It has been running several thousand dollars a year to keep updated. Among other expenses, the large format flatbed scanner I have been using for 6 years now is on its last leg. The manufacturer no longer provides repair service for this model. This scanner is used to digitize the original newspapers for the Online Newspaper Archives. A new one of sufficient quality costs $1,400-$1,600.

I would like to add virtual tours of historic homes and complexes in American history to HistoryBuff.com. The first one will be the Abraham Lincoln home and neighborhood, law offices and old state capitol building in Springfield, Illinois. I have already purchased an excellent digital camera out of my own pocket but still need other hardware and software in order to do the virtual tours. (Virtual tours are not static shots and viewed in a slide show manner. Instead they are 360 degree views of the various rooms.) Audio commentary will be included in the virtual tours to relate historical background to what the visitor is seeing.

The tenth of each month a newsletter is sent out by email to several thousand subscribers. The newsletter is free and contains trivia, brain teasers, and a trivia contest. Ten prizes are award each month. In return for placing banners to promote upcoming History Channel documentaries, they provide the better prizes offered as prizes for these contests. The rest of the prizes (historic newspapers, etc.) I purchase out of my own pocket.
